TheShell.com began in 1992 as doxx.net, Barrett Lyon's high school project. It was a transition from the BBS world and was turned into a real business by Barrett and Peter Avalos in 1996. The idea was to create a business that can continue to afford the cost of on-going expanded operations. At its peak TheShell.com represented a large self-operated Alpha processor based network and was the home to thousands of Internet users. Over time Lyon and Avalos moved on to their own path in business and TheShell.com was put on the back burner and is still operated as a side project jointly by Peter and Barrett.
